Stage & Screen Sips: 10 Christmas Cocktails Inspired by Shows

Festive cocktails inspired by Christmas movies, theatre traditions, ballet, holiday classics, and screen favorites — with trivia, recipes, and a little “curtains up” cheer.

Christmas cocktails, but make them theatrical.

By Lu, OTL Seat Fillers

I can’t believe it took me more than 10 years to create a “Christmas cocktails inspired by shows” blog post. It combines two of my favorite things: entertainment and creamy, dreamy, flavor-filled holiday drinks.

Every year, I make our family’s festive Christmas drink. That is actually the name of it, and I make it by the blender-full. It is filled with three types of alcohol, chocolate syrup, cream, and ice cream. I feel like Tom Cruise in Cocktail, except I am not using a shot glass and the choreography is mostly me trying not to spill.

But enough about my deeply unofficial mixology skills. Curtains up on Christmas cocktails with a dash of trivia thrown in for good measure.

Please enjoy responsibly. These recipes are intended for adults of legal drinking age. Many can be adapted into mocktails with alcohol-free substitutions.

Entertainment-inspired Christmas cocktails

Some of these sips are directly tied to a holiday story or screen moment. Others are playful riffs on characters, colors, music, theatre traditions, or iconic Christmas scenes.

Mix your way through them while you stream, sing along, host a holiday watch party, or plan a festive night out. Each drink also includes a trivia question tied to its inspiration, with answers near the bottom.

Note: These recipes are curated and adapted by the OTL Seat Fillers team from classic cocktails, fan creations, and entertainment-inspired holiday ideas.

1. Griswold Inspired Eggnog

Griswold Inspired Eggnog served in a clear moose-shaped glass with Christmas lights on the table.

This is the kind of eggnog you can imagine being poured into a moose mug while the Christmas lights short-circuit outside. Rich, sweet, and just boozy enough, it is a toast to the beautifully chaotic holidays of one very determined suburban family.

Trivia

In National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, what unexpected animal is discovered living inside the Griswolds’ Christmas tree?

Ingredients

  • 2.5 oz spiced rum, bourbon, or brandy
  • 5 oz traditional eggnog, homemade or quality store-bought
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • Freshly grated nutmeg, for garnish
  • Maple syrup, for optional rim
  • Brown sugar mixed with pumpkin pie spice, for optional rim

Instructions

  1. If you are rimming the glass, dip the rim in maple syrup, then coat it with the brown sugar and pumpkin pie spice mixture.
  2. Add the spiced rum and eggnog to a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
  3. Shake gently until chilled.
  4. Strain into your prepared glass.
  5. Garnish with a cinnamon stick and a generous dusting of fresh nutmeg.

2. Buddy’s Sweet on Maple Bourbon Coffee

Buddy’s Sweet on Maple Bourbon Coffee in a red Merry Christmas mug piled with whipped cream, candy, and a candy cane, next to syrupy spaghetti.

If Buddy the Elf grew up and was allowed near the bar cart, this is probably what he would make. Cozy coffee meets maple-sweet warmth — a crowd-friendly drink for late-night wrapping sessions or post-sledding thaw-outs.

Trivia

In Elf, what sugary staple does Buddy famously pour all over his spaghetti?

  4. Stir in the maple bourbon.
  5. Ladle into mugs, top with whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon, and add a maple-glazed waffle cookie if you like.

3. Pantomime Cocktail

Pantomime Cocktail in a coupe glass with a foamy top, sitting in a grand theatre decorated with Christmas trees and lights.

Light, frothy, and just a bit theatrical, this vintage-style cocktail is perfect pre-show sipping material. The egg-white foam and nutmeg top give it that “curtain just went up” flourish — no booing or hissing required.

Food safety note: Use pasteurized egg white if preferred, especially when serving guests.

4. The “You Go, Glen Coco” Candy Cane Martini

You Go Glen Coco Candy Cane Martini in a glass rimmed with crushed peppermint and surrounded by candy canes.

This peppermint dessert martini is pure holiday high-school drama in a glass: flashy, sweet, and absolutely unapologetic about its candy cane obsession. Perfect for anyone who quotes along with the movie every December.

5. “Who” Doesn’t Love a Grinch Cocktail

Cartoon-style green Grinch cocktail with a candy cane on a mantle above a fireplace hiding a stolen Christmas tree.

All the best parts of Whoville’s color palette show up here in one glass: bright green, pops of red, and just enough sparkle. Tart, playful, and ideal for anyone whose heart grows three sizes during holiday movie night.

Small angel ornament holding a flaming glass mug of It’s a Wonderful Flaming Rum Punch in front of a Christmas tree.

9. The White Christmas Cocktail

The White Christmas Cocktail in a martini glass sitting in the snow, surrounded by snow-covered trees.
